Getting Ready for Moving Day- A Checklist

Here is a general timetable that starts 10 weeks before you actually move. We’ve added a couple of items. You can alter the timetable, but remember everything usually takes longer than you anticipated, so be conservative.

Nine to ten weeks before
Read the articles on moving that apply, contact your homeowner or rental insurance agent to determine what's covered in a move,and prepare a list of items to be moved.

Nine weeks before

  • Sell, auction, or give away items that will not be moved.
  • Make arrangements to transfer all applicable medical records and (X-Ray, MRI, CAT) films to new address or take them with you.

Eight weeks before

  • Interview 3 to 4 prospective movers. Discuss with them the costs, insurance, packing, loading, delivery and claims procedures associated with your move. Also discuss storage if applicable.
  • Compare the estimates and select the mover who meets your needs. If moving yourself, reserve truck, trailer or moving pod

Six to seven weeks before
Select mover. If applicable, contact third party insurance agent to understand your coverage.

Four weeks before
Obtain boxes and start to pack if you are doing it yourself. If mover is doing packing, make arrangements to have it done two days prior to M-day.

Three weeks before

  • Contact existing telephone and other utility providers to transfer service to new owner.
  • Contact telephone and utility providers for your new home.
  • Make travel arrangements and hotel reservations.
  • Reserve the elevator if your new home is in a condominium, coop, or rental apartment.

Two weeks before

  • Notify Post Office of Change of Address or Mail out change address cards.
  • Close out bank and checking accounts if moving out of area where your current bank doesn’t have a branch.
  • Make arrangements for baby or pet sitters for day of move.
  • Have your mechanic check the vehicle out, If traveling by car or van.
  • Make sure you have enough prescription medications and transfer these to a national drug store chain in your new neighbor if applicable.

One week before
Double check your moving list and modify it to reflect any items that will be or will not be moved. Notify mover.

One to two days before

  • Have mover pack your goods or pack yourself.
  • Defrost any freezers and refrigerators that will be moved.
