Home Remodeling

Why don't women get any respect from Contractors?

The last thing I need is a contractor who doesn't pay attention or disrespects my observation and comments regarding the construction drawings or quality of workmanship. Yet that is what I am increasingly having to deal with. Does this sound familiar or am I the only woman who has experienced this?

I'm a successful woman, who juggles a career, family with kids, and 70 year old mother who requires a lot of care. Sound familiar? My husband works and travels a great deal, so overseeing our home remodeling project is my second job. Now I will confess that I am an not handy and am not an engineer. However, I am a project manager and deal with complex technology projects. I know when someone is blowing smoke at me and when they make absolutely no sense.

My Family Room Renovation- what went right and wrong

Rear of family room flows on to deck and kitchen

This is the third in a series of articles on what went right and wrong during family room renovation. We've already discussed our bathroom, basement and kitchen renovations so see those too. You may be puzzled as to why we are even doing this. It's really simple.

Soundproofing and Fireproofing Approaches

Is your next door neighbor nosy or driving you crazy?

Noisy neighbors in the condo or apartment next door, street sounds, the night owls in your family, or that "man den" are all reasons to consider soundproofing in your home. If you are converting that basement to a rental apartment or mother-in-law suite, you may be able to sound proof and make your home more resistant to fire too. We'll show you how to spend your money wisely on both below beginning with the least expensive.

Better Shopping Experience at the Home Depot and Lowes

Obama thinks insulation is sexy at the Home Depot, courtest bittenandbound.com

Is it really possible to enhance the shopping experience at Lowes or the Home Depot? God we hope so and of course President Obama is counting on it. Not really, but at least I grabbed your attention didn't I? And besides the President did meet with labor leaders at the Home Depot in Alexandria Virginia about installing insulation so at least he is counting on the Home Depot and Lowes to be a part of that solution.

Despite the fact that many people have strong feelings against or for these stores or certain products like Pegasus faucets that the Home Depot provides. I've been pretty amazed that there is no middle ground when it comes to these home improvement stores for a variety of reasons. I've often asked myself "how come?" and what could be done about it. Here's some suggestions Home Depot and Lowes.

Getting a grip on shopping at Lowes and the Home Depot

It's very obvious that Lowes and the Home Depot face great challenges in serving customers who are just not that handy. I put myself in that category and I am sure that other men and women do as well. Sure we can do the obvious- go buy a book or search the Web. Like anything else, we have to undertstand the basics and common tools associated with do it yourself (DIY) projects. Cartoons by Howtoons.com and Instructables.com may be an easy and fun way to bridge that knowledge gap and to enable customers to be brave enough to undertake more complex projects. We illustrate this with a couple of examples.

Earthquakes- more common than you think

Seismograph showing waves generated by earthquake

The earthquake in Haiti has made us keenly aware of the damage to life and property that these forces of nature can do. If you live in California, the Pacific Northwest or Hawaii, you are probably more aware of their destructive power. However, earthquakes occur routinely every day in the world and in places not known for them.

Earthquakes occur every day

Places like Washington DC, New York City and Chicago have all had earthquakes in the last 10 to 15 years. Luckily, these quakes have not made the front page or caused much damage other than frayed nerves and some broken dishes. Most people were barely aware of them when they did occur.

Commercial Contractors doing Residential Remodeling

Take good notes when interviewing Contractors

I received a question in the forums about commercial contractors doing residential remodeling work. Instead of responding to it in the Forums, I thought it was very important to many people who are looking for a remodeling contractor. It's also important for commercial contractor to fully understand what they are getting themselves into if they want to do residential remodeling. Here's what Gloria Z asked:

"Hello, I saw site and read some of your articles about contractors. We have narrowed the selection to two contractors. One is very easy to talk to but they have only done commercial and apartments projects. The other contractor does residential projects but not of the quality or price range that we are looking for. Do you have any advice on which to choose. Thanks, we are really don't know who to turn to." Gloria Z

Should you be pouring concrete in cold weather?

Cold Weather Concreting Guidelines

Much of the country is an ice box and that has put a stop to most remodeling and new construction projects in the northern part of the U.S. However, those of you who live in the South have experienced some pretty cold weather too. You may be wondering if you should delay your remodeling or go forward with the concrete work.

7 Tips to Successful Remodeling

Plumbers are very important in any remodeling project

You've heard the horror stories and unfortunately many are true. People handing over their hard earned money to contractors who can't deliver or worse construct unsafe projects. No one can promise that it won't happen to you, but we can tell you how to reduce your risks, protect yourself and improve the chances of getting the remodeling project that you want. Just follow these steps.

Remember the "Unwritten Clause" in every Remodeling Contract
HGTV's Mike Holmes of "Holmes on Homes" recently said that it seems that on the projects he fixes there might as well be an unwritten clause in the contract. The clause is reads "Beware, you could be screwed." Those may not be the exact words, but they are pretty close to it even if you have done your home work, checked references etc. before going with a certain contractor. If we got it wrong, we apologize Mike. By the way we love the Holmes on Homes website and show.

Negotiating with Remodeling Contractors- reducing uncertainties

High quality and error free construction drawings save time and money

Homeowners who are pushing ahead with a major remodeling project are rare. So if you are among them, you are in a much better position to negotiate the price. We suggest several things you can do to enhance your bargaining position and make it a win win for both you and the contractor.
