Green Building Materials
Building a home, renovating, remodeling, or even designing a room can be stressful, and few of us want to think about how we could be damaging the Earth or harming the environment with every choice that we make. However, if you are not using green building materials, you could be having a very negative impact on the world, in ways that you may never even have considered. This affects your future, and the future of everyone in your family, and rarely in a good way.
Standard building materials are rarely safe for the environment, from traditional paints to flooring and much more. The answer is not to quit building, or keep our outdated homes, but to make smarter choices with the products that we build with, such as those that are sustainable. In this way, we can do what we want without worrying about the environment by making intelligent purchases.
Eco-Friendly Paints
In order to fall into this classification, paints should have low or no volatile organic compounds, commonly known as VOCs. Low VOC paint is available at the same places where traditional paints are sold, and often not much more costly. They offer the same great coverage, in the same popular brand names, but are safe for the environment, including the air that you and your family breathes every day.
You are not limited to standard white with low VOC paints, and you often have the same variety of colors that you would with standard paints. You can have the décor that you want without damaging the environment, giving you unlimited options for your home.
Green Flooring Options
You may not think about the fact that so many flooring options are made of materials that we cannot easily replace. However, there are dozens of options that are safe for the environment without looking inexpensive or out of place. Many are actually trendy design choices in our eco-conscious world, so you will look like you were choosing something fashionable instead of just trying to protect the environment.
Bamboo and cork are two very popular flooring options that look great and are made from sustainable materials. Recycled carpet is less common but still a great idea, and manufactured wood that looks like the real thing is the most common flooring choice today. Color is not a limitation even with sustainable flooring options, and most home improvement retailers offer a wide variety of green building materials, including great flooring options.
Environmentally-Friendly Cleanup
One final note: people often overlook the importance of recycling when they are finished with a renovation project. Waste contributes to the world’s already overwhelmed landfills, so recycle as much as you can to keep with the green trend as you clean up after your remodeling job. From glass and plastics to paper goods and much more, you can do your part to keep things clean without simply throwing everything in a trash can or setting it beside the road for someone else to deal with.
