New Water Heaters save 55% more energy plus

You can save up to 55 percent on hot water and get a $300 tax credit by choosing the new Energy Star rated water heaters. The water heater accounts for 17% of the energy consumption in the average U.S. home, ranking third behind heating and cooling, and kitchen appliances.

How to Read the Energy Star Label The new standards for water heaters went into effect January 1, 2009. Your new water heater must be in service by the end of 2009.

The new standards will apply to gas storage water heaters, whole home gas tankless water heaters and solar water heaters. Later in 2009, Energy Star standards will apply to gas condensing and heat pump models as well.

Hot water heaters that have an Energy Star Rating don't all qualify so read the Energy Star Rating Label and ask the dealer. Also remember that the tax credit, which can reimburse a homeowner for 10% of the installation cost, up to $300, will not apply to high-efficiency gas storage water heaters, even if rated by Energy Star.

See the specifics on hot water heaters and also the Guide to other Energy Star Rated products.

New water heaters not that green...

I have a friend that works as a Berkeley plumber and as you can see, he knows almost everything about water heaters. He advice me not to buy these model of water heater because, even if they might save energy, they loose water and doesn't have enough power to keep it very warm neither.

This is great news and a

This is great news and a perfect timing considering all the saving energy efforts worldwide. Is there a list of suppliers for these heaters? Obviously I am interested into having one yesterday. I'll try my luck at Whirlpool parts.

Bob, I think the main

Bob, I think the main concern here is cost efficiency. Will people welcome this as a worthy investment? No, unless the government offers reimbursements in any way. People have way too much burden these days to even care about their water heaters. And then, you have the anti-green advocates with all their cynical point of views. You may be willing to invest on this but remember, not all think the same way as you/we do.

Finally, a good step towards

Finally, a good step towards more nature-friendly measures. With these new standards, I think more people will be aware of the small things that they can do for conservation. The only problem I see here is again, the people themselves. While these new water heaters may help conserve water, it'll be pointless if people continue to waste clean water. Oh well, people are people.
