Nine Ways to Save Energy, Money and Be Green

Printer-friendly version

Using energy takes money, which ususally means more time spent away from the things we want to do.

Here are nine easy to do steps that will save energy, save money and time and do something positive for the planet.

What You Can Do Today

  1. Replace those regular light bulbs wth compact fluorescent bulbs which are energy efficient,
  2. Purchase paper towels, books, stationary and business cards that are made from recycled materials, (if Harry Potter can do it so can you),
  3. Put your computer on standby mode instead of using energy when you are not around,
  4. Fill up the dishwasher entirely before you run it and use shorter wash cycles,
  5. Clean the lint from the clothes dryer after each use,
  6. Don't do the laundry, dishes, cooking or other energy intensive activies between 5:00 and 8:00 pm, which coincides with peak electricity and natural gas demand,
  7. Keep the shades drawn when you heat or cool your home,
  8. Calk and weather strip your windows and doors to prevent heat loss during winter and cold air from seeping out during the summer,
  9. Consider using a fan during the summer and winter. Reverse the blade rotation to better circulate heated and cold air throughout your home.
