Skylights for that Roof Overhang and Porches

Overhangs and porches provide shelter and beauty to a house. They also cut down on natural light entering the main part of a house. Skylights installed in overhangs and porches solve this problem.

Skylights installed in overhangs and porches solve this problem.

Skylights over overhang

When we designed the family room and deck, we included an overhang. This provides shelter from the rain and shade from the Washington area's brutal summers. During construction, however, we realized that the overhang did an exceptional job. It made the adjacent family very dark.

Side view of overhang

Our solution was to install three skylights in the overhang. This was relatively easy. The skylights provide the proper amount of light and the overhang is serving it's original purpose.

We considered the same solution for our front porch. However, we did not install skylights there. The porch is about 7 feet deep. It also has full sun most of the day. So we felt like there was adequate light. Nevertheless, skylights can work very well in your porch area also.
